Self-guided walks around Broad Green, 2015

For this year’s Croydon Heritage Festival there is a choice of two self-guided walks exploring the Broad Green area.

Broad Green is a vibrant and changing area to the north of Croydon on the road to Thornton Heath. However, much of the area’s heritage is hidden behind shop fronts, or has been demolished to make way for new and very different buildings.

These self-guided walks explore the Broad Green area and give insights into its buildings and history. Choose your version – both are available to download below. You can also pick up printed copies from libraries and at the Heritage Day in North End on 20th June.

Broad Green Heritage Trail
Broad Green Heritage Trail
Developed as part of the project Documenting Broad Green and Church Alley, this trail explores the area from West Croydon station to Canterbury Road, with several options as to the length of walk and points to see.

Broad Green Walk

This walk starts at West Croydon station and has a choice of endings, at either West Croydon station or Wandle Park.  It includes London Road, Handcroft Road and Sumner Road.

CNHSS talk on Monday 24th February 2014

Come and hear about our Documenting project on 24th February, as part of the Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society‘s regular programme of talks.

Date/time: Monday 24th February 2014, 7.45pm
Venue: the East Croydon United Reformed Church, Addiscombe Grove (very close to East Croydon station, to the south of the tramlink). Click to see on Google maps. Talks take place in the Small Hall.
Admission free

Details: “Documenting Broad Green and Church Alley” An illustrated talk by Cathy Aitchison, chair of Friends of Church Alley, about the group’s project to record the history of Broad Green through people’s memories, stories and photographs. The talk includes living memories of post-war childhood, shops, entertainment, people and recent events in the area. Using archive materials it also explores how Broad Green has changed over the centuries: the elegant nineteenth century mansions along London Road – ‘Millionaire’s Row’ – have long gone, but behind the shops on the former green some of the gentlemen’s residences can still be seen…
